Carolyn Dewar is a Canadian-born management consultant, a senior partner at McKinsey & Company, and the founder and global co-leader of its CEO Practice. She studied economics and international relations at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Her work spans financial services, technology, and consumer businesses, helping executives make decisions and lead their teams through rapid growth, organizational transformation, crises, and mergers. She also teaches in programs for serving CEOs and prospective successors, addressing strategy, corporate culture, and collaboration with boards. Her book “CEO Excellence: The Six Mindsets That Distinguish the Best Leaders from the Rest,” coauthored with Scott Keller and Vikram Malhotra, draws on an analysis of approximately 7,800 CEOs and interviews with 67 business leaders to identify approaches and practices associated with effective leadership. It examines six responsibilities: setting direction, aligning the organization, mobilizing the leadership team, working with the board, connecting with external stakeholders, and managing personal effectiveness. Through examples from executives’ experiences, the authors explore how leaders can combine bold strategic decisions with attention to people and culture, strengthen relationships within and beyond their organizations, and concentrate their time on work where their individual contribution matters most.
