Candida R. Moss (born 1978) is a British biblical scholar and historian of early Christianity, and the Edward Cadbury Professor of Theology at the University of Birmingham. Born in London, she studied theology at the University of Oxford and earned her doctorate at Yale University. She taught at the University of Notre Dame before joining Birmingham in 2017. Her research examines martyrdom, persecution, disability, and slavery in early Christianity, with particular attention to the relationship between religious ideas, the body, and power. Through newspaper and magazine articles and television commentary, she also explores the connections between religion, politics, and public life for wider audiences. In “God’s Ghostwriters: Enslaved Christians and the Making of the Bible,” she investigates the work of unnamed enslaved people who helped produce and circulate the New Testament. She examines the roles of secretaries taking dictation, scribes refining language, workers producing manuscripts, and messengers carrying letters and teachings between communities. Moss argues that these people contributed to the expression, interpretation, and transmission of Christian texts, rather than merely carrying out instructions. The book won the 2026 Grawemeyer Award in Religion. By questioning accounts that attribute biblical authorship solely to prominent apostles and evangelists, she traces the formation of Christianity through the labor of those who recorded, copied, read aloud, and transported its texts.
