ケイティー・キタムラ（Katie Kitamura、1979年–）は、アメリカの小説家、ジャーナリスト、美術評論家。カリフォルニアと日本で育ち、プリンストン大学を卒業後、アメリカ文学の博士号を取得した。小説のほか、New York Times、Guardian、美術誌Friezeなどに寄稿し、ニューヨーク大学で創作を教えてきた。2017年の長編『A Separation』（未邦訳）は、別居中の夫を探してギリシャへ向かう翻訳家を語り手に、夫婦が互いについて知っていることと、知らないままにしてきたことを描く。2021年の『Intimacies』（未邦訳）では、ハーグの国際法廷で働く通訳者が、私生活の親密な関係と、戦争犯罪で訴追された人物の言葉を自らの声で伝える仕事の間で揺れる姿を描いた。同作は全米図書賞のロングリストに選ばれた。他者の言葉や感情を引き受ける仕事への関心は、2025年の『Audition』（未邦訳）で舞台俳優の物語へ展開した。マンハッタンのレストランで会う中年の女性俳優と若い男性を起点に、両立しないように見える二つの物語が進み、母親、妻、俳優という役割と、家族が共有する現実の不確かさを扱った。キタムラはブッカー賞のインタビューで、愛や母性が互いに矛盾する経験になり得ることを、説明するだけでなく小説の構造そのものに組み込みたかったと語った。同作は2025年ブッカー賞と2026年ピュリツァー賞小説部門の最終候補に選ばれた。
Katie Kitamura (born 1979) is an American novelist, journalist, and art critic who grew up in California and Japan. A Princeton graduate with a doctorate in American literature, she has written for publications including the New York Times, the Guardian, and Frieze, and has taught in New York University’s creative writing program. A Separation (2017) follows a translator travelling to Greece to find her estranged husband, examining the uneven distribution of knowledge within a marriage and the stories people construct about those closest to them. Intimacies (2021) moves to an interpreter at an international court in The Hague, where private attachments intersect with the professional task of speaking the words of a man accused of war crimes. The novel was longlisted for the National Book Award. Kitamura’s interest in people whose work involves carrying the language and emotions of others took another form in Audition (2025), whose narrator is a stage actor. Beginning with a lunch between a middle-aged woman and a younger man in Manhattan, it develops two apparently incompatible narratives, examining motherhood, marriage, performance, and the instability of a family’s shared reality. In an interview with the Booker Prizes, Kitamura explained that she wanted the contradictory experiences of love and motherhood to be embedded in the novel’s structure rather than merely described. Audition was shortlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize and was a finalist for the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
