Kate Walbert (1961–) is an American novelist and short story writer whose fiction explores marriage, relationships between mothers and daughters, memory, and loss through interwoven voices and shifting periods. Born in New York City, she grew up in several places, including Japan. “Our Kind,” which uses a collective “we” to recount the lives of women who came of age in the 1950s, was a finalist for the 2004 National Book Award for Fiction. “A Short History of Women,” tracing five generations of women from the suffrage movement to contemporary life, was selected as one of The New York Times Book Review’s ten best books of 2009. With irony and humor, her work examines the tension between the roles women are expected to fulfill and their efforts to find voices of their own.
