Kate Crawford is an Australian scholar and social scientist whose research examines artificial intelligence and large-scale data systems in relation to politics, labor, the environment, and social power. She is a Research Professor at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and a Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research. She has also co-founded interdisciplinary research initiatives including the AI Now Institute at New York University, helping establish the study of AI as a social and political system rather than solely a technical field. In "Atlas of AI: Power, Politics, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence," Crawford examines AI as a material and political infrastructure dependent on mineral extraction, energy, low-paid labor, and vast collections of data, tracing how these systems can concentrate power in technology companies and governments.
