Gayl Jones (born 1949) is an American novelist whose work explores Black women’s lives and the lasting effects of slavery and violence across generations. Her debut novel, “Corregidora,” follows a blues singer confronting her family’s past. “The Healing” was a finalist for the National Book Award. “Palmares,” a novel drawing on the history of a community founded by people who escaped slavery in Brazil, was a finalist for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
