Gary Marcus (born 1970) is an American cognitive scientist and artificial intelligence researcher. He is Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Neural Science at New York University and earned his Ph.D. in cognitive science at MIT. His research has ranged from human language acquisition and cognitive neuroscience to artificial intelligence. He also founded the machine-learning company Geometric Intelligence, which was acquired by Uber. Marcus has long challenged the dominant approaches to deep learning and, more recently, large language models, highlighting their limitations in reasoning, common sense, and reliability while advocating for more robust and trustworthy AI systems. In "Taming Silicon Valley: How We Can Ensure That AI Works for Us," he examines problems associated with generative AI, including misinformation, deepfakes, the use of copyrighted material, and the concentration of power in large technology companies. He proposes stronger policies and institutions—including data rights and layered AI oversight—to ensure that the benefits of AI can be realized while limiting its risks to individuals and society.
