Garry Wills is a historian and critic writing across American politics, classics and religion. He taught history at Northwestern and contributed extensively to The New York Review of Books. Inventing America reexamined the language and intellectual background of the Declaration of Independence through Jefferson's draft and won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Lincoln at Gettysburg investigated the rhetoric and historical setting of the address, considering how it reshaped understandings of the nation's founding and Constitution; it won the Pulitzer Prize. Saint Augustine followed the late-antique thinker's life and faith. Across political speeches and religious texts, Wills used close reading and historical context to question familiar interpretations.
