Carey K. Morewedge is a social psychologist who studies decision-making and consumer behavior. He is Professor and Chair of Marketing at Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, where he uses experiments to examine how people judge the value of experiences, money, possessions, digital goods, and artificial intelligence. His research has explored subjects ranging from the finding that repeatedly imagining the consumption of food can reduce actual consumption to psychological ownership, cognitive bias, and trust in algorithms. His representative book, “Possessions: How We Think about Our Stuff, and Ourselves, as We Own Less and Use More,” scheduled for publication in 2027, examines the shift from purchasing and owning goods to renting and subscribing to services, and how digital technology is changing the relationship between possessions and personal identity.
