Riyoko Ikeda (born 1947) is a Japanese manga artist and classical singer. She made her debut as a manga artist in 1967 and achieved nationwide fame with The Rose of Versailles, a historical drama set against the backdrop of the French Revolution that became a major cultural phenomenon in Japan. Known for her sweeping historical narratives and psychologically rich characters, Ikeda has created numerous influential works, including The Window of Orpheus and Eikou no Napoleon: Eroica. Her work significantly expanded the artistic and thematic possibilities of shojo manga and has had a lasting influence on manga, theater, and popular culture. In her forties, she entered music university to study classical singing and later began a career as a vocalist. She is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of Japanese manga.
