Shin Iyohara (1972–) is a Japanese novelist and geoscientist. After graduating from Kobe University, he earned a doctorate in Earth and Planetary Science from the University of Tokyo. Drawing on his scientific background, his fiction combines scientific insight with deeply human stories. He made his literary debut in 2010 after winning the Yokomizo Seishi Mystery Award for "Odaiba Island Baby" and received the Nitta Jirō Literary Prize in 2019 for "Tsuki Made San-kiro" ("Three Kilometers to the Moon"). In 2025, he won the 172nd Naoki Prize for "Ai o Tsugu Umi" ("The Sea That Inherits Indigo"), a linked collection of stories that explores the enduring relationships between people, nature, and local communities across Japan through a scientific lens.
