Seiko Ito (born 1961) is a Japanese novelist, creative artist, and rapper from Tokyo. After graduating from Waseda University’s School of Law, he worked as a magazine editor at Kodansha before expanding his activities across literature, music, theater, and television. Alongside his pioneering role in the development of Japanese-language hip-hop, he made his literary debut in 1988 with “No Life King” and later received the Kodansha Essay Award for “Botanical Life.” His representative novel, “Sozo Radio,” won the Noma Literary Newcomer Prize. Set against the Great East Japan Earthquake, it follows DJ Ark as he broadcasts from the top of a cedar tree over the imaginary airwaves, allowing the living to listen for the voices of the dead and confront the losses left by the disaster.
