Areno Inoue (born 1961) is a Japanese novelist. After graduating from the Faculty of Humanities at Seikei University, she made her literary debut by winning the Femina Prize for "Watashi no Nureefu" in 1989. Her fiction explores desire, betrayal, jealousy, and silence within intimate relationships between spouses, lovers, parents, and children, tracing emotions that shift gradually beneath apparently peaceful everyday lives. Her best-known work, "Kiriha e," received the Naoki Prize in 2008. Set on a remote island once sustained by coal mining, the novel follows Sei, a school nurse who lives quietly with her painter husband but becomes drawn to an aloof male teacher newly assigned to the island. Without ceasing to love her husband, Sei moves emotionally toward a “kiriha”—the furthest point of a mine tunnel beyond which no passage remains—within the confines of the island community.
