Yasuko Imanishi is a Japanese translator of nonfiction on science, psychology, and history. Born in Kanagawa Prefecture, she translates books that connect natural processes with human societies. Giulio Boccaletti’s “Water” follows the ways that securing and managing water have shaped states and economies from antiquity to the present. Lars Chittka’s “The Mind of a Bee” examines learning and intelligence in insects and raises questions about consciousness. Joseph Henrich’s “The WEIRDest People in the World” explores how cultural practices and institutions influence patterns of thought. These translations introduce approaches that cross disciplinary boundaries and reconsider familiar assumptions about both humans and other forms of life.
