Keiko Ito is an international economist whose empirical research examines exporting, foreign direct investment, productivity, and innovation at the firm level. She graduated in industrial engineering and management from Waseda University in 1994 and worked at Sony before completing a master’s degree in area studies at the University of Tsukuba in 1999. She earned a doctorate in economics at Hitotsubashi University in 2002. After serving as a senior researcher at the International Centre for the Study of East Asian Development and teaching at Senshu and Chuo universities, she became a professor in Chiba University’s Graduate School of Social Sciences in 2022. Her experience also included a visiting appointment at Columbia University’s Center on Japanese Economy and Business and a secondment to the OECD. Using Japanese firm and plant data and trade statistics, she has investigated how internationalization affects business performance, domestic industrial structure, and labor markets. Her work has also addressed trade-policy uncertainty, export controls, and changes in global value chains. Her 2025 book “Gurobaruka to Nihon Kigyo: Kokusai Shushi Kozo Henka to Pafomansu no Jissho Bunseki” examined why Japanese companies’ expanding exports and overseas production did not translate sufficiently into domestic economic growth. It analyzed the connections between internationalization, productivity, and innovation; the effects of offshore production on employment and business structure; and Japan’s changing position in international production networks. Considering investment in intangible assets and human capital as well as domestic equipment, it explored obstacles to a mutually reinforcing relationship between internationalization and innovation. The book received the 66th Economist Award for fiscal 2025 and the 69th Nikkei Prize for Excellent Books in Economic Science in 2026.
