Isabella M. Weber is a German political economist. She is an associate professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an associate in research at Harvard University’s Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies. Her research focuses on China’s economic reforms, global trade, the history of economic thought, and monetary and price theory. She also studies policy responses to inflation. In “How China Escaped Shock Therapy: The Market Reform Debate” (未邦訳), Weber examines the economic policy debates of the 1980s over how China should proceed with market reform after the death of Mao Zedong. In contrast to the rapid “shock therapy” pursued in countries such as Russia, China adopted a gradual approach that made selective use of institutions inherited from the planned economy. Weber explores how this path shaped China’s economic transformation and its subsequent rise. During the inflation and energy crises of recent years, she became known for the concept of “sellers’ inflation,” which emphasizes the role of corporate pricing power and supply constraints in driving price increases. She has argued for strategic price controls and public intervention in markets during emergencies. Her honors include the Joan Robinson Prize, the Keynes Preis, the Hans-Matthöfer-Preis, and the International Studies Association Best Interdisciplinary Book Award.
