Isabel Wilkerson is a journalist and nonfiction writer investigating race and social history. She won a Pulitzer Prize for her newspaper reporting, taught at institutions including Princeton, Emory and Boston University, and received the National Humanities Medal. The Warmth of Other Suns reconstructed the twentieth-century migration of African Americans from the South through testimony and individual lives. It followed decisions to leave, the search for work and housing, and discrimination in new destinations, placing a major demographic transformation within personal experience. The book won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Caste examined the durable hierarchies underlying racial inequality in the United States. In comparison with India and Nazi Germany, it considered how social rankings are sustained through institutions and everyday behavior.
