Ian McGuire (born 1964) is a British novelist and literary scholar. He studied at the University of Manchester, earned an M.A. from the University of Sussex and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, and teaches American literature and creative writing at the University of Manchester, where he co-founded the Centre for New Writing. He made his debut as a novelist with "Incredible Bodies" in 2006. His second novel, "The North Water," was longlisted for the 2016 Man Booker Prize and won the Royal Society of Literature's Encore Award. Set aboard a whaling ship bound for the Arctic in the mid-nineteenth century, the novel follows the troubled ship's surgeon Patrick Sumner and the brutal harpooner Henry Drax through murder, shipwreck, and a struggle for survival in the Arctic wilderness.
