Osamu Ito is an economist and professor emeritus at Saitama University. He has studied Japan’s financial system and economic policies from a historical perspective, examining the formation of postwar financial structures and the policy responses to the crises that followed the collapse of Japan’s asset bubble. In “The Historical Structure of Japanese-Style Finance” (『日本型金融の歴史的構造』), he analyzes the development and distinctive features of Japan’s bank-centered financial system; the book received the Economist Prize. His work “Responses to the Post-Bubble Financial Crisis: The Complete History, 1990–2005” (『バブル後の金融危機対応 全軌跡1990〜2005』) examines the measures taken by the government and financial institutions after the bubble burst. His recent book, “Why Has the Japanese Economy Declined? Thirty-Five Years of Stagnation Brought About by ‘Correctness’” (『日本経済はなぜ沈下したのか 「正しさ」が招いた35年の停滞』), revisits Japan’s prolonged stagnation through changes in policy, institutions, and society.
