Makoto Ito (born 1965) is a Japanese scholar of Buddhism and a translator of English-language nonfiction on international affairs and modern history. Born in Tokyo, he graduated from Kyoto University’s Department of Philosophy and earned a doctorate in literature through Buddhist studies at Bukkyo University. His research has included Chinese Huayan thought, Ksitigarbha scriptures, and modern Japanese Buddhism, alongside translation work. He translated Bill Bryson’s “One Summer: America, 1927,” which depicts American society through events including Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight, baseball, cinema, and politics. Ito also translated Peter Baker and Susan Glasser’s “The Divider.” Drawing on interviews, diaries, notes, and emails, the book reconstructed the internal workings of the Trump White House from 2017 to 2021.
