Kaori Ishikawa is a Japanese cell biologist and an associate professor at the University of Tsukuba. After earning a Ph.D. from the university’s Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences, she worked as a researcher at Takeda Pharmaceutical Company before returning to academia. Using cultured cells and mouse models, she investigates how mutations and functional changes in mitochondrial DNA contribute to aging, neurodegeneration, cancer, and other diseases. In 2020, she received the Young Scientists’ Award of the Commendation for Science and Technology by Japan’s Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Co-authored with Akira Iwase and Toru Soma, “Otona no tame no seibutsugaku no kyokasho: Saishin no chishiki o honshitsuteki ni rikai suru” is an introductory biology textbook that connects foundational subjects—including cells, genetics, metabolism, evolution, and ecosystems—with developments in contemporary research.
