Mai Inoue translates art books, illustrated nonfiction, and fiction into Japanese. Through Trannet’s translation auditions, she worked on “A History of Pictures for Children” and a guide to book towns. In her account of these projects, she described applying because of her interest in art, maintaining an approachable voice while handling specialist terminology, and distinguishing the voices of the two authors of the painting-history book. She also translated S. Elizabeth’s “The Art of the Occult,” which brings together around two hundred works to examine connections between art and astrology, alchemy, spiritual belief, and mystical practice. The volume combines images with explanations of the traditions that informed them. Alongside illustrated books, her published translations include mystery fiction.
