Takako Iijima is a Japanese translator of English-language nonfiction on the history of science, statistics, psychology, and society. In Michael Friendly and Howard Wainer’s “A History of Data Visualization and Graphic Communication,” she translated an account of the development of graphs and maps as ways to represent time, space, and social phenomena. Illustrated examples show how visual forms have made patterns in numerical information accessible to analysis. Her translation of Katja Guenther’s “The Mirror and the Mind” explored the history of experiments using mirrors to investigate self-recognition in people, animals, and robots. She also translated Sally Adee’s “We Are Electric.” The book follows roughly two centuries of research into bioelectricity, extending beyond nerve signals to electrical processes involved in cells and the formation of organs. Its account examined both the history of the field and questions being pursued by contemporary researchers.
