Kanako Igarashi is a Japanese translator of nonfiction on history, science, and culture. Andrew Pettegree’s “The Book at War” traces the roles played by books and libraries during conflict, examining reading as both a source of comfort and an instrument of propaganda and mobilization. Nina Nesseth’s “Nightmare Fuel” investigates what happens in viewers’ brains and bodies as they watch horror films, connecting scientific research with cinematic techniques. Amit Katwala’s “Tremors in the Blood” follows efforts to determine truth through the lie detector. Igarashi has also translated Deborah Blum’s work on poisons, introducing books that examine scientific inquiry within the societies and cultures where it is practiced.
