Makoto Furukawa (born 1988) is a Japanese novelist from Fukuoka. After leaving Kokugakuin University, he made his literary debut in 2016 when "Nuwanba Naran" received the Shincho Prize for New Writers. That work, along with "Yoji-sugi no Fune" and "Rakko no Ie," was subsequently nominated for the Akutagawa Prize, which he won in 2020 for "Seitaka Awadachiso." Much of Furukawa's early fiction is set on an island in Nagasaki Prefecture closely connected to his mother's family, weaving together local dialect, family memories, and stories passed down across generations. "Seitaka Awadachiso" follows a woman who travels with her relatives to clear the overgrown grounds of her mother's abandoned family home, gradually uncovering layers of family and island history shaped by whaling, war, migration to Manchuria, and people crossing the surrounding seas.
