Yoichi Funabashi (born 1944) is a Japanese journalist and international affairs commentator. During his long career at The Asahi Shimbun, he served as Beijing correspondent, Washington correspondent, bureau chief in the United States, columnist, and ultimately Editor-in-Chief from 2007 to 2010. Specializing in international politics, diplomacy, national security, geopolitics, and the global economy, Funabashi has spent decades reporting on and analyzing world affairs and Japan's foreign policy. In 2011, he founded the independent think tank Rebuild Japan Initiative, later renamed the Asia Pacific Initiative, which conducted major investigations into national challenges including the Fukushima nuclear disaster and Japan's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He currently serves as Chairman of the Global Council at the International House of Japan. Known for his extensive reporting experience and incisive analysis of international affairs, Funabashi is widely regarded as one of Japan's leading international journalists.
