Volker Ullrich (born 1943) is a German historian, journalist, and nonfiction author specializing in modern German history. After studying history, literature, and education at the University of Hamburg, he spent many years as an editor and historical correspondent for the German weekly Die Zeit. His research focuses on Adolf Hitler, Nazi Germany, and the Weimar Republic. Widely respected for his meticulous archival research and accessible writing style, Ullrich is best known for his two-volume biography Hitler: Ascent and Hitler: Downfall, which offer a nuanced and comprehensive portrait of Hitler and the rise and collapse of the Third Reich. Through his scholarship and journalism, he has become one of Germany's leading interpreters of twentieth-century history.
