Philippe Sands (born 1960) is a British-French lawyer, legal scholar, and author. He is Professor of the Public Understanding of Law at University College London (UCL) and has appeared as counsel before international courts, including the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. Specializing in international law, human rights, and international criminal law, he is also known for narrative nonfiction that connects legal history with personal and family stories. His best-known book, "East West Street: On the Origins of 'Genocide' and 'Crimes Against Humanity'," explores the origins of two foundational concepts of international law through the intertwined histories of its creators and his own family.
