Philip Roth（フィリップ・ロス、1933–2018）は、アメリカの小説家。バックネル大学卒業後、シカゴ大学で英文学の修士号を取得した。ユダヤ系アメリカ人のアイデンティティ、性、政治、歴史、老い、人間の欲望を鋭いユーモアと大胆な筆致で描き、20世紀後半から21世紀初頭を代表するアメリカ文学の巨匠の一人とされる。1959年のデビュー作『Goodbye, Columbus』で全米図書賞を受賞し、1997年刊行の『American Pastoral』は、戦後アメリカ社会の理想と崩壊を描いた代表作として高く評価され、1998年のピューリッツァー賞 フィクション部門を受賞した。そのほかにも全米批評家協会賞、PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction、マン・ブッカー国際賞（生涯功労賞としての2001年受賞）など数多くの文学賞を受賞している。代表作に『Portnoy's Complaint』『The Counterlife』『Patrimony』『Sabbath's Theater』『American Pastoral』『I Married a Communist』『The Human Stain』『The Plot Against America』などがある。

Philip Roth (1933–2018) was an American novelist. After graduating from Bucknell University, he earned a master's degree in English from the University of Chicago. Widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Roth explored Jewish American identity, sexuality, politics, history, aging, and human desire with wit, psychological depth, and stylistic brilliance. He first gained national recognition with Goodbye, Columbus (1959), which won the National Book Award, and later received the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for American Pastoral (1997), a landmark novel examining the collapse of the American Dream in the postwar era. Over his career, he also received numerous major literary honors, including the National Book Critics Circle Award, the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, and the 2001 International Booker Prize for lifetime achievement. His other major works include Portnoy's Complaint, The Counterlife, Patrimony, Sabbath's Theater, I Married a Communist, The Human Stain, and The Plot Against America.
