Phil Klay (1983–) is an American novelist and former U.S. Marine Corps officer. After graduating from Dartmouth College, he served in the Marine Corps from 2005 to 2009 and was deployed to Iraq’s Anbar Province as a public affairs officer in 2007–08. His short-story collection “Redeployment” depicts the Iraq War and its aftermath through the perspectives of combat troops, military chaplains, and veterans struggling to readjust to civilian life. The stories examine guilt, shaken faith, moral responsibility, and the divide between the military and the society on whose behalf it fights. The collection won the 2014 National Book Award for Fiction and the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize.
