Frank Pasquale is an American legal scholar specializing in the law and policy of artificial intelligence, algorithms, and machine learning. He is Professor of Law at Cornell Law School and Cornell Tech. Educated at Harvard University, the University of Oxford, and Yale Law School, he has examined how automated ranking, scoring, and decision-making systems affect individual rights, social equality, and institutional power, with particular attention to transparency and algorithmic accountability. In "The Black Box Society: The Secret Algorithms That Control Money and Information," Pasquale examines how opaque systems in search, reputation, and finance increasingly shape people's opportunities and choices. He exposes the imbalance of power between organizations that collect and analyze information and the individuals being evaluated, and argues for greater transparency, oversight, and accountability in the digital economy.
