Frank Herbert (1920–1986) was an American science-fiction writer born in Tacoma, Washington. He worked in journalism and photography before publishing his first science-fiction story in 1952. His fiction brought ecology, religion, politics and the control of resources into the same narrative, exploring how societies shape their environments and are shaped by them. Set on Arrakis, a desert planet that supplies the precious spice melange, his 1965 novel “Dune” follows Paul Atreides as his family becomes entangled in imperial conflict and he emerges as the focus of a religious movement. The novel won the inaugural Nebula Award for Best Novel and shared the Hugo Award for Best Novel. Examining Paul’s reign as emperor and the consequences of the holy war fought in his name, the sequel “Dune Messiah” questions the promises of charismatic leadership and the apparent advantages of knowing the future. Political conspiracies and personal loyalties expose the limits of Paul’s authority, even as his followers regard him as a savior. Herbert wrote six novels in the original Dune sequence, extending its concerns across generations. From the practical demands of conserving water to the institutions governing an interstellar empire, he connected environmental conditions with social organization and repeatedly examined the dangers of concentrating power in a heroic figure.
