Francine Prose (born 1947) is an American novelist, essayist, and literary critic. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she graduated from Radcliffe College and has written extensively across fiction, essays, and literary criticism. She made her debut as a novelist with "Judah the Pious" in 1973, and her novel "Blue Angel" was a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction. In "Reading Like a Writer: A Guide for People Who Love Books and for Those Who Want to Write Them," Prose draws on works by writers including Dostoevsky, Flaubert, Chekhov, Austen, and Dickens to examine how close attention to words, sentences, paragraphs, dialogue, details, and characterization can reveal the craft behind fiction, arguing that one of the most effective ways to learn how to write is to read great literature closely.
