Drawing on their experiences as a queer child of immigrants who lost both parents at a young age, their work explores belonging, family, gender, colonialism, and the continuing legacy of the Partition of India. The poetry collection “If They Come for Us” connects South Asian history with the experiences of growing up in contemporary America. Their debut novel, “When We Were Sisters,” follows three orphaned Muslim American sisters as they attempt to raise one another. It was longlisted for the 2022 National Book Award for Fiction and won the inaugural Carol Shields Prize for Fiction in 2023.
