Yukiko Fuse is a Japanese translator of English-language fiction and nonfiction on history, war, and society. After studying English at a foreign-language university, she taught English at high school. Time in the United States, study toward becoming a Japanese-language teacher, and commercial translation preceded her training in literary translation at Fellow Academy, where Kazuki Agarie mentored her. Fuse translated Timothy Snyder’s “Bloodlands,” which examines the eastern European territories where the policies of Hitler and Stalin intersected in mass killing. Her translation of Charles C. Mann’s “The Wizard and the Prophet” follows two scientists whose contrasting responses to food, population, and resources emphasized technological innovation and ecological limits. She also translated Benjamin Uchiyama’s “Japan’s Carnival War.” Through popular culture under total war, the study reconsidered how everyday life, private desires, and state mobilization interacted in wartime Japan.
