Mutsumi Funayama is a Japanese literary translator working from Chinese and English. She studied French literature at Tohoku University and graduated in political science from Keio University. Before becoming a translator, she worked at the Nikkei International News Center and the Swiss Embassy. Her translation of Trevor Morris’s Chinese-language collection, published in Japanese as “Benpatsu no Shaarokku Hoomuzu,” won the ninth Japan Translation Award in 2023. The linked mysteries relocate the Holmes tradition to British-ruled Hong Kong, where a Manchu detective and a physician investigate crimes amid late nineteenth-century East Asian history. She also translated Vaseem Khan’s “The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra,” in which a retired Mumbai police officer inherits a baby elephant while investigating a young man’s death. In nonfiction, her translation of Elyakim Kislev’s “Happy Singlehood” examined the experiences of unmarried people. Drawing on international data and interviews, the book considered social relationships, everyday life, and assumptions about marriage.
