Takao Fujiwara (born 1971) is a Japanese translator and editor working on science, exploration, the environment, and archaeology. Born in Mie Prefecture, he graduated from Shizuoka University’s Faculty of Science. His translations include nonfiction on evolution, the universe, and relationships between people and the environment. He translated Dave Goulson’s “Silent Earth,” an examination of research into insect decline and its implications for ecosystems and agriculture. In Nichola Raihani’s “The Social Instinct,” he translated an investigation of cooperation from microorganisms to humans through evolution and the negotiation of competing interests. His translation of Tim Coulson’s “The Universal History of Us” follows the beginnings of the universe, matter, the emergence and evolution of life, and human consciousness, bringing several scientific disciplines to bear on the history underlying an individual’s existence.
