Fujishima Yoko is a Japanese cultural sociologist and fashion researcher and an associate professor in the College of Social Sciences at Ritsumeikan University. After studying French literature at the University of Tokyo, she studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, and continued her research at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies. Her work examines fashion-industry history, consumer culture, fashion media, and the ways social media and e-commerce shape consumption and the perceived value of clothing. She previously worked as a research scientist at the ZOZO Research Institute and as editor-in-chief of Fashion Tech News. She also serves as a visiting researcher at RIKEN and an executive officer and CCO at the fashion-technology company Synflux. Her coedited volume “Critical Word Fashion Studies: Watashi to Shakai to Ifuku no Kankei” explores clothing through questions of the body, gender, media, industry, and the environment. In “‘Arinomama’ no Shintai: Media ga Egaku Watashi no Mitame” (The “Natural” Body), she investigates how advertising, magazines, and social media construct ideals of physical appearance.
