Brian W. Kernighan (born 1942) is a Canadian computer scientist. During his long career at Bell Labs, he contributed to the development of UNIX and co-created the AWK programming language. He later served as a professor of computer science at Princeton University, where he helped shape generations of programmers through his teaching and writing. His best-known book, "The C Programming Language," co-authored with Dennis Ritchie, remains the definitive guide to the C language and one of the most influential programming books ever published. He also authored "UNIX: A History and a Memoir," an insider's account of the origins of UNIX and the culture of Bell Labs.
