Branko Milanovic (1953–) is a Serbian-American economist specializing in global income distribution and inequality. After spending nearly two decades researching inequality and poverty at the World Bank, he became a research professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and a senior scholar at its Stone Center on Socio-Economic Inequality. In “Global Inequality,” he uses worldwide income data to show how globalization benefited the middle classes of emerging economies and the global rich while producing far smaller gains for much of the middle class in wealthy countries. In “Capitalism, Alone,” he compares Western liberal meritocratic capitalism with China’s political capitalism and examines the inequality and corruption generated by both systems.
