Tomoko Fujiwara is a Japanese translator and international political news commentator whose work focuses on English-language nonfiction about politics and society. She graduated from Keio University’s Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Law. Her experience includes translation for Reuters and the Japanese edition of Foreign Affairs, university-level translation teaching, and commentary on American politics. Examining historical tensions between rising and established powers, Graham Allison’s “Destined for War: Can America and China Escape Thucydides’s Trap?” appeared in her Japanese translation as “Beichu Senso Zenya.” It draws comparisons between earlier great-power rivalries and relations between China and the United States, considering both the dangers of conflict and ways to avoid it. Investigating how social stereotypes affect performance, Claude Steele’s “Whistling Vivaldi” was translated by Fujiwara as “Stereotype no Kagaku.” The book explores how anxiety about being judged through racial, gender, or other stereotypes can influence test results and behavior, and discusses ways to reduce these pressures. Examining the role of shared spaces in sustaining communities, Eric Klinenberg’s “Palaces for the People” appeared in her translation as “Atsumaru Basho ga Hitsuyo da.” Through libraries, schools, parks, and other gathering places, it shows how social infrastructure fosters everyday connections, reduces isolation, and can help protect lives during disasters.
