Kazuto Hongo (born 1960) is a Japanese historian specializing in medieval Japanese political history and the study of historical documents. Born in Tokyo, he studied Japanese medieval history at the University of Tokyo and its graduate school. At the university’s Historiographical Institute, he worked on the compilation of the fifth series of “Dai Nihon Shiryō” and later served as a professor. In 2026, he became a specially appointed professor and director of the Liberal Arts Center at Fujita Health University. His research examines relations between the imperial court and warrior governments, hereditary institutions, family authority, and military power, often distinguishing formal rank from the people who exercised actual control. His representative book, “Kenryoku no Nihonshi,” traces power struggles involving emperors, retired emperors, shoguns, regents, and feudal lords to show how lineage, personal ability, and family ties shaped succession and political appointments in Japan.
