Paul Kalanithi（ポール・カラニシ、1977–2015）は、アメリカの脳神経外科医、作家。Stanford Universityで英文学と生物学を学び、University of Cambridgeで科学史・哲学の修士号を取得した後、Yale School of Medicineで医学を修めた。脳神経外科医として研鑽を積むなか、36歳で進行性の肺がんと診断され、自らの闘病と医師としての経験をもとに、生と死、医療、人間の尊厳について深く考察した。死後に刊行された回想録『When Breath Becomes Air』は世界的なベストセラーとなり、多くの読者に深い感銘を与えた。医学と人文学を融合させたその思索は、現代における「生きること」の意味を問い続ける作品として高く評価されている。
Paul Kalanithi (1977–2015) was an American neurosurgeon and writer. He studied English literature and human biology at Stanford University, earned a master's degree in the history and philosophy of science from University of Cambridge, and received his medical degree from the Yale School of Medicine. While completing his neurosurgical training, he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer at the age of thirty-six. Drawing on his experiences as both physician and patient, Kalanithi reflected with remarkable insight on mortality, medicine, purpose, and the meaning of life. His posthumously published memoir When Breath Becomes Air became an international bestseller and has been widely praised for its eloquence, humanity, and profound exploration of what it means to live in the face of death.
