侯 孝賢（Hou Hsiao-hsien）- 台湾：映画監督

侯孝賢（ホウ・シャオシェン、1947年–）は、台湾の映画監督、脚本家、プロデューサー。中国広東省に生まれ、幼少期に家族と台湾へ移住した。1980年代に始まった台湾ニューシネマを牽引し、長回しや固定カメラを用いた静謐な映像によって、家族の日常と台湾の複雑な歴史を重ね合わせてきた。1989年の代表作『悲情城市』でヴェネチア国際映画祭金獅子賞を、2015年の『黒衣の刺客』でカンヌ国際映画祭監督賞を受賞。『悲情城市』は、日本統治の終結から二・二八事件へと至る戦後台湾を、ある一家の離散と喪失を通して描いた作品である。著書『侯孝賢の映画講義』は、2007年に香港バプテスト大学で行った連続講義を収録し、自身の生い立ちや撮影現場での経験、小津安二郎やロベール・ブレッソンから得た示唆を交えながら、現実をどのように観察し、一つの場面を映画として構成するのかを語っている。

Hou Hsiao-hsien (born 1947) is a Taiwanese film director, screenwriter, and producer. Born in Guangdong, China, he moved to Taiwan with his family as a child. A leading figure of the Taiwanese New Wave, he developed a distinctive cinematic language based on long takes, restrained camera movement, and close observation of everyday family life, using private experience to illuminate Taiwan’s complicated history. He won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for his representative work, "A City of Sadness," in 1989 and the Best Director Award at Cannes for "The Assassin" in 2015. "A City of Sadness" follows the fragmentation and losses of one family as Taiwan moves from the end of Japanese rule into the February 28 Incident. His 2007 lectures at Hong Kong Baptist University were published in Japanese as "Kō Kōken no Eiga Kōgi." Drawing on his childhood, filmmaking experiences, and reflections on directors such as Yasujirō Ozu and Robert Bresson, the book explains how careful observation of reality is transformed into cinematic form.
