堀田 秀吾（HOTTA Shugo）- 言語学者

堀田 秀吾（ほった しゅうご）は、法言語学、心理言語学、コミュニケーション論を専門とする言語学者。熊本県に生まれ、1999年にシカゴ大学で言語学の博士号を取得した。2000年に立命館大学法学部の助教授となり、2005年にはカナダのヨーク大学オズグッド・ホール・ロースクールで法学修士号を取得。2008年に明治大学法学部へ移り、2010年に教授となった。言語が法の実務でどのように働くかを研究し、裁判官や裁判員による評議のコミュニケーション、商標を人がどう認識するかといった問題を、言語学と心理学の両面から扱ってきた。2010年刊の『法コンテキストの言語理論』では、評議における発話や商標の言語分析を通して法言語学の方法を示し、研究成果を法実務に応用する際の課題や、言語教育との接点も論じた。一般向けの執筆では、心理学、脳科学、行動経済学などの研究を、日常の判断や行動を考える材料として紹介している。2020年刊の『最先端研究で導きだされた「考えすぎない」人の考え方』は、迷いや不安をめぐる研究をもとに、考え込むことと行動することの関係を扱い、45の方法を紹介した。2025年刊の『科学的に証明された すごい習慣大百科』では、仕事、学習、健康、人間関係、心の状態、暮らしの六つの領域から112の方法を集め、研究の知見と具体的な行動を見開きの図解で説明した。

Shugo Hotta is a linguist specializing in forensic linguistics, psycholinguistics, and communication studies. Born in Kumamoto Prefecture, he earned a PhD in linguistics at the University of Chicago in 1999. He became an associate professor in the Faculty of Law at Ritsumeikan University in 2000 and earned a Master of Laws at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, in Canada in 2005. He moved to the Faculty of Law at Meiji University in 2008 and became a professor in 2010. His research examines how language operates in legal practice, including communication during deliberations by judges and lay judges and the ways people perceive trademarks. His 2010 book Ho Kontekusuto no Gengo Riron used analyses of deliberative speech and trademark language to explain approaches in forensic linguistics. It also discussed obstacles to applying linguistic research in legal practice and connections with language education. In books for general readers, Hotta draws on psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral economics to discuss everyday decisions and actions. Saisentan Kenkyu de Michibikidasareta “Kangaesuginai” Hito no Kangaekata, published in 2020, explored the relationship between deliberation and action through research on hesitation and anxiety and presented 45 approaches. In Kagakuteki ni Shomei Sareta Sugoi Shukan Daihyakka, published in 2025, he compiled 112 approaches across six areas: work, learning, health, relationships, mental well-being, and daily life. The book presented research findings alongside concrete actions in illustrated two-page spreads.
