Chieko Hori is a Japanese translator working from English into Japanese. She graduated from Kumamoto Women’s University, now the Prefectural University of Kumamoto. Her translations range from general-interest books to scholarly works, spanning science, the humanities, business and literature. Examining disorganisation through habits and psychology, Marilyn Paul’s “It’s Hard to Make a Difference When You Can’t Find Your Keys: The Seven-Step Path to Becoming Truly Organized,” which Hori translated as 『だから片づかない。なのに時間がない。――「だらしない自分」を変える7つのステップ』, explores why attempts to become organised often fail. It connects practical changes with an understanding of personal goals, addressing procrastination, scheduling and commitments to others alongside physical clutter. Recounting an engineer’s role in creating a landmark aircraft, Joe Sutter and Jay Spenser’s “747: Creating the World’s First Jumbo Jet and Other Adventures from a Life in Aviation,” translated by Hori as 『747――ジャンボをつくった男』, follows the design and development of the Boeing 747. It describes the technical challenges and financial pressures surrounding the project from the perspective of the engineer who led it. Hori’s translations bring Japanese readers experiences ranging from changes in everyday routines to the demands of large-scale technological development.
