Bob Shacochis (born 1951) is an American novelist and journalist. His service with the Peace Corps in the Caribbean helped shape the island settings of his early fiction. His first story collection, “Easy in the Islands,” won the National Book Award for First Fiction; his second, “The Next New World,” also includes stories rooted in Caribbean life. His debut novel, “Swimming in the Volcano,” follows an American expatriate drawn into political conflict on a fictional island and was a finalist for the 1993 National Book Award. Shacochis has also reported on the U.S. intervention in Haiti. His later novel “The Woman Who Lost Her Soul” moves across countries and decades to examine the effects of war and espionage on individual lives.
