Beth Gardiner is an American environmental journalist based in London. After spending about a decade as a reporter for the Associated Press, she began reporting on climate change, air pollution, fossil fuels, and plastics for publications including “The New York Times,” “The Guardian,” “National Geographic,” “The Washington Post,” and “Scientific American.” Her first book, an international investigation of the health effects of air pollution, was a finalist for the National Association of Science Writers’ Science in Society Journalism Awards. Her representative work, “Plastic Inc.: The Secret History and Shocking Future of Big Oil’s Biggest Bet,” investigates how fossil-fuel companies have expanded plastics as a source of future growth while the energy transition threatens demand for oil. Reporting from petrochemical communities in Louisiana and waste-processing sites in Indonesia, Gardiner documents the health damage near production facilities, the export of plastic waste, and the way industry promotion of recycling has helped sustain a system of mass production and disposal.
