Ben Macintyre is a British journalist, columnist, and associate editor at The Times. He has worked as a foreign correspondent in New York, Paris, and Washington. His books focus on espionage during the Second World War and the Cold War, drawing on archival material and interviews to examine the loyalties, convictions, friendships, and betrayals behind intelligence operations. He has also written and presented BBC documentaries based on his work. “The Spy and the Traitor: The Greatest Espionage Story of the Cold War” follows KGB officer Oleg Gordievsky’s recruitment as a British double agent, his intelligence work, and his escape from the Soviet Union, incorporating testimony from Gordievsky and the MI6 officers involved. Published in 2026, “Redwood: The Untold Story of the Cold War’s Most Extraordinary Spy” was longlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction. It traces KGB officer Vladimir Kuzichkin’s activities in post-revolutionary Iran and his relationship with the MI6 officer who handled him. Through their exchanges, fears of exposure, and escape planning, Macintyre examines how decisions made in secret shape international politics and the lives of those involved.
