Ben Creed is the shared pen name under which Chris Rickaby and Barney Thompson write historical crime fiction. Rickaby, from Newcastle upon Tyne, worked as an advertising copywriter and founded the agency Everything Different. Thompson trained in classical music, spending two years studying conducting with Ilya Musin at the St Petersburg Conservatory before moving into journalism and editing. They met on a Curtis Brown creative writing course. Their collaboration brought Rickaby’s experience in developing stories together with Thompson’s knowledge of Russian and music in novels set under Stalin. Their debut, “City of Ghosts” (2020), follows Revol Rossel, a former violinist serving in the state militia, as he investigates five bodies arranged on railway lines in Leningrad in 1951. The inquiry leads into the city’s musical establishment and a society dominated by denunciations and the secret police, confronting Rossel with the past that destroyed his musical career. It was shortlisted for both the Crime Writers’ Association’s Gold Dagger and John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger in 2021. Miyuki Murayama’s Japanese translation appeared that year as “Chi no Sosokyoku.” In “A Traitor’s Heart” (2022), Rossel is close to death in a labour camp when the interrogator who ruined his life returns to enlist him in a murder investigation. The hunt for a killer named after Koshchei of Slavic folklore becomes entangled with plots within the Kremlin. The trilogy’s third novel, “Man of Bones” (2024), is set in the winter of 1953. Two bodies found beside a statue of Lenin draw Rossel into an investigation reaching back to a hidden episode in Bolshevik history.
